My 6 Month Blogging Milestone & What I've Learned So far

Apple Macbook Pro Work Area

Wow i cant believe that 6 Months ago i started Blogging full time!, where has that time gone? I did initially set up my blog in 2012 when we were trying for a baby and when i got Pregnant i decided to log everything, i wanted a in-depth record of my Pregnancy and beyond but unfortunately 3 months later a Miscarriage was confirmed and everything changed for me. Blogging just seemed the last place i wanted to be or share how i felt.

I quickly fell Pregnant with my Little Layla, but i was Paranoid that if i started to log and blog everything again then i would miscarry!, so when i was 8 months pregnant i blogged about making cloth nappies and wipes etc as you do! lol.. but the last month of Pregnancy was awful so i rested as much as i could. Fast forward to October 2013 when i jumped in at the deep end and started Blogging almost everyday and I’ve loved every single minute of it!

In those 6 Months I’ve learnt soooooo much in blogging terms, but i do wish that i knew what i know now, at the beginning! But then i guess you learn as you go on. So i thought id write a little post on what I’ve Learned so far as it might help others πŸ™‚

Statistics:

Try not to get Hung up on how many Visits/Views you are getting each day (can you tell I’ve spent sooooooo much time doing this when i could of used that time more productively, i.e composing a great post!), but DO analyse them i.e… look at where they are coming from (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest E.T.C), which posts are popular, which posts aren’t and can you improve those?… also its a good thing to look at when is your busiest time and day… Use this information as a guide of what to Post, on what day and time.

For me, my Popular Post is my Bugaboo Vinyl Tutorial, Busiest Day is Tuesdays and 7pm i get my most views.

Comments:

Dont underestimate the power of Commenting!… In the beginning i didn’t really comment all that much on other blogs, i kind of just focused on my own… which is ok of course, but if you want others to see you, then you need to show yourself and this can be easily achieved by just commenting on other Blogs. DON’T SPAM! i.e don’t just comment any old rubbish just for the sake of it, you wouldn’t like it!… be genuine, read the post and comment appropriately, anything less than 8 words Google will look at it as Spam… So nice Long, appropriate commenting will do you good!

Blog Hops/Linkies:

These are Fantastic!! A Blog Hop is where someone on their blog will host a party on a certain day of the week and will invite you to come and link up a post of your own that fits in with the theme their have chosen. Blog Hops are a great opportunity to meet new blogs and a great way to get your blog noticed, but they only work by hopping from one linked up post to another and commenting appropriately.

Social Media:

Has taken the world by storm and its a great place to showcase your stuff!… Get an account with every Social Media Platform that is out there a few of them are: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram, Bloglovin! those are just a few that i can think of from the top of my head, but they is plenty more. I would say that NO social Media account is better than another, but it depends on how you use them. Join Groups, Boards etc and Share where appropriate.

My most Referred Traffic comes from (in order): Google, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter

Consistency:

This is what i would class as Vital!. You don’t have to post everyday, if you want to post once a week or once a month that’s fine (its your blog so its entirely up to you!), but stick at a day that you can post on as this will help your followers know when to expect new content from you and therefore there will return. If your a Huge fan of Pinterest it will do you well if you pinned Β for Example: 10 pins spread out evenly over the day rather than 10 pins all in 1 go as this will keep you noticed by other members for longer therefore more people will see you… be consistent on Twitter, Facebook etc and engage with people this can help to grow friendships and again showcase your stuff.

Content:

Write about what you love, like and whats important to YOU!… Stick to your own style.. If your not sure what that is, don’t worry it will come in time and that’s what your followers want… they want to come and see you because they enjoyed what you had written before. Adding Fab original images to your posts will help to attract peoples eyes, People are instantly drawn to pictures and pretty photos will draw people in and hopefully help to get Re-pinned and shared, therefore increasing your following and traffic.

Layout:

Your Layout can play a big Part in how many Views you get, ask yourself is your blog easy to navigate about on, do you offer your readers more posts to see that are related to the one they are looking at?… If your unsure ask a friend to give you a blunt and honest review of how user friendly your Blog is. Dont be afraid to try a New theme, Layout, Plugins etc.

In the 6 months that I’ve been blogging, I’ve gone through 3 Themes, numerous Plugins and endless amounts of layouts… My current theme and Layout i Love!! since using it my Views have shot up! so sometimes a change is a good thing.

So this is in short key elements of what ive learned so far! I hope it is of some help to you…

Do you have any tips you’d like to share???

The only advice I always give is to write honestly and proof-read before publishing. I know so-called grammar police are made fun of, but, if something is written with lots of spelling and grammar mistakes it may look to readers as if the blogger doesn’t care about what they’ve written. I saw one blog that only had lower case letters for everything and though the writer was obviously passionate about her subject, it just didn’t read well. I didn’t know what was the name of a person or a place and what were plurals etc. It made it hard to leave comments.

You’ve learnt a lot already in 6 months, keep it up! Well done πŸ™‚ x

I really appreciated this post. I have only been Blogging less than a month and have fallen in love with it already. Blogging is the best part of my day which I take just for myself. I am definitely going to try a bit of everything that you have said… As much as I don’t check any stats, I would love people to see it and give me feedback, as harsh as it may be and I may give changing my layout a go. I didn’t want to seem too scatty to any readers but i’m interested to see what else I can do. Happy half year Blogiversary and thanks for the advice.

This is the perfect post to link up to Share With Me. Thank you so much for sharing it. Happy 6 month blogiversary!!! That’s amazing. Your theme is amazing. I am currently trying to get my done as I hate it at the moment, just tweaked a free wordpress theme but everyone seems to have it now. I love your tips as I am new too. And I have so much to learn. I get hung up on the statistics which just discourage me to continue so I am trying as of late to not look. lol It’s so hard not to. Great advice here. Thank you. #sharewithme

Happy blogaversary! Such a milestone. I’m only a teeny bit older and had a similar experience to you – so much to learn in blogging! I need to branch out to other media than Twitter and FB. I am slow to master these things even though I know they’re technically easy – mainly due to time constraints. I wish I’d read this post before I started blogging, but that would be physically impossible! x #sharewithme

Congratulations on reaching your six month milestone! You’ve certainly learned a lot in six months and there’s plenty of good advice for new bloggers. I’d only just joined Twitter at six months and hadn’t discovered linkies, Britmums, Tots100 or commenting!

Some great tips here which I will definitely be taking on board – thank you! I started my blog in January, so I’ve been going just over 4 months now. However at the same time I’ve been writing the first draft of my second novel which has taken up a lot of time and head space… Now that I’ve moved into the editing phase with that I’m hoping I’ll have a bit more time to focus on the blog – reaching out to different social media is definitely something on my list, as well as playing around with the design. I’m loving everything I’ve discovered in the blogosphere so far – and can’t wait to see where else it will take me! x

Thank you :)… Its very addictive aint it? But i found sometimes it encouraged me to share my posts more and i found that if i commented on lots of blogs and participated in more blog hops i would instantly see a huge spike in my stats πŸ™‚ so sometimes it does pay to watch your stats, because then you can see what your doing and how that works out x
